Finding a suitable retirement home is the first step, so we have provided links to some of the key builders in the UK offering this type of property

If you are planning to view a retirement home development it is worth considering some of the following points during your visit.

Is the location close enough to your family and friends?
Are there sufficient travel options for both you and your family?
What local services are on offer? ie shops, post office, GP and hospital services?

Ask at the site office for as much information as possible about the area to help you gain a clear picture and identify any potential difficulties

One of the key benefits of retirement housing is that homes are usually built as a complex or courtyard of properties.

This creates a dual benefit for homeowners who can both retaining a sense of individuality and privacy, but also gain the advantage of support through a variety of services and facilities unique to retirement homes.

There is however, many aspects of buying a retirement home that should be carefully considered.

Here you will find some useful tips on what to expect, but we would also recommend that you visit the web site of Age Concern who can offer a wealth of information on this subject -

It is also worth checking the communal facilities such as laundry or residents lounge. If there are already residents present, why not take a little time to chat to them about the facilities and general area?

When viewing a retirement home there are some important aspects which may require special attention during your visit.
One of the most important is access to the property - Is it on the ground floor or is there a lift if a two-storey development? Would you be able to manage stairs if the lift was out of order?
Check the room sizes to make sure that any furniture you plan to with you will fit.
Check door and corridor widths not just for your furniture, but also for easy access with a walking frame or wheelchair.
